Bianca Theron Wins Nomads WGWP Junior Championships

The Nomads WGWP Junior Championships, sponsored by Ratanga Junction, were played at the picturesque Metropolitan Golf Club on Sunday.  From the outset the tournament was expected to be highly contested with eight of the top ten juniors in the country entered.

After Round 1, Mae Cornforth from Potchefstroom CC (North West) led the field on two under par 68, with Bianca Theron  from Devonvale GC (Boland) one shot behind on one under par 69.  In third position, JiSun Kang from Atlantic Beach GC (WP) was level par 70 and Kelly Erasmus from Durbanville GC (WP) two shots behind on 72.

With near perfect conditions, everything was set up for an exciting second round in the afternoon.  After the front nine Bianca was level par for her second round, with JiSun one shot behind and Kelly two shots behind.  On the back nine, JiSun’s approach shot on the par 5, 12th hole cost her, whilst Bianca cemented her lead and with a birdie on the par 4, 13th hole to finish the second round on one under par 69 and to lift the Nomads WGWP trophy on two under par for the tournament 138 (69,69).

JiSun finished the second round on two over par to claim second place and also lift the Prentice Cup – Best Gross 36 Holes – Closed (WP),  as the highest placed Western Province player with a score of 142 (70,72).  This follows JiSun’s second place at the Boland Junior Championships earlier in the week.

Kelly continued to play solid golf and with a one over par 71 in Round 2 finished in third position on a score of 143 (72, 71).  KZN junior Michaela Fletcher (and winner of the Boland Junior Championships earlier in the week) came back strongly in the second round and finished in 4th place on 146 (75,71).  After a difficult first round Cara Gorlei from Milnerton GC (WP) had a level par 70 second round to secure fifth position on 147 (77,70).
